Make a Difference - Help Us Help Others10% of profits from Panda Pouch/Daisy Days will be donated to the MCC (Mennonite Central Committee) towards the Health for Mothers and Children program in Nigeria. In isolated communities in Taraba State, Nigeria, many women and infants suffer because of a significant lack of quality health care, clean water and education. Pregnant women lack prenatal care. Poor sanitary conditions and a need for training for birth attendants contribute to high rates of women and children dying during childbirth. Traveling to a clinic or hospital is costly, and roads are impassable during the rainy season so many diseases are left untreated. In addition, a number of people die of poisonous snakebites, which are common in this region. MCC is helping to provide health education to traditional birth attendants in 16 rural villages. The training, which includes prenatal and postnatal care and hygiene, is expected to reduce the number of women and infants who die in childbirth, prevent other illnesses associated with childbirth and reduce the mother-to-child transmission of HIV. Also, antivenom treatments for snakebites will be available locally. $47 Cdn./$40 U.S. provides five locally purchased newborn kits. $29 Cdn./$25 U.S. helps provide training for traditional birth attendants and primary health care workers and antivenom treatments for snakebites.
